Japan began the first round with two losses, to Yugoslavia and Hungary before defeating the United States to finish in third place in the division and earn a spot in the ninth- to twelfth-place consolation round. The team lost their first game there, against Norway, and played for eleventh and twelfth places. Japan defeated Iceland in that game.
