- 1948 – Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad debut a new lightweight passenger car consist for the Golden State passenger train between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.
- 1987 – Amtrak and Conrail trains collide in Maryland.
- 2000 – A northbound BM92 multiple unit and a southbound passenger train headed by a Di 3 locomotive collided on Norway's Rørosbanen line near Åsta station, killing 19 people.
