A Janner is simply someone who was born and bred in Plymouth, and has been a term used for hundreds of years. Sailors through history have referred to the city's indigenous population as 'janners' from 'Guz', as part of the of the centuries old Royal Navy slang. At Plymouth Argyle football matches, there are a number of chants involving the word 'janner' as a form of collective identity amongst the crowd members.
