janet. is the fifth studio album by pop singer Janet Jackson, released on May 18, 1993 (two days after her 27th birthday).

Co-producing the album with longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album would go on to become the best-selling record of Jackson's career thus far, selling nearly 20 million copies worldwide. janet. became the first album by a female artist to debut at #1 in the Soundscan era.

All songs featured the lyrical contributions of Jackson and most of the production went to Jam, Lewis and Jackson, though her then-husband Rene Elizondo claimed to have had some hand in the music as well. He notoriously cupped his hands over Jackson's breasts on the infamous Rolling Stone cover which uses the same photo as the album.

Yielding six top ten hits, the album would go on to win a Grammy, MTV, Billboard and Soul Train music award as well as several nominations in the Oscar, Golden Globe and American Music Awards.

The album has a hidden track, "Whoops Now", for which a video was made in 1995.
