Jan Randall

Jan Randall is a Canadian composer who has composed music for over seven hundred broadcast productions. In addition he is a performer, producer, recording engineer, musical director, orchestrator, conductor, midi programmer and lyricist who sings and plays a variety of instruments including piano, guitar, electric bass, harmonica, and accordion. His television soundtracks include Lost Over Burma (NFB/ news documentary), Wilderness Journeys (Discovery Channel/nature series), Geek TV (ACCESS/comedy series), Naked Frailties (drama/feature film) and Purple Gas (comedy/ feature film). His work has garnered two AMPIA awards for Best Composer/ Musical Score.
In live theatre Jan has served as Music Director for musicals, comedies, dramas and special events. Productions include Billy Bishop Goes to War, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Jesus Christ Superstar. The National Ice Theatre of Canada commissioned works including Tangled Ice Webs, A Midsummer Night’s Ice Dream, and Poetry in Motion which premiered at Edmonton’s 2006 International Fringe Festival. He spent three years with Toronto's Second City, appeared on SCTV, and collaborated with Michael Myers, Catherine O’Hara, Ron James, Richard Kind, and Ryan Stiles. He has improvised music for comedy groups including Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie, Chimprov, and Theatre Sports.
Jan composed ceremonial music for the 1996 World Figure Skating Championships broadcast live to over 50 countries. This commission led to a position as Music Director for the 2001 World Championships in Athletics. For those ceremonies he composed and produced music for a cast including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, seven thousand dancers, a dozen feature acts, and a one thousand voice choir. The event was broadcast live to over four billion people worldwide.
Jan has performed with Bo Diddley, Otis Rush, Amos Garrett, Sha Na Na, Spencer Davis, Sam Lay and Gary U.S. Bonds. He has provided orchestra arrangements for Ben Heppner and Robert Guillaume. As a singer songwriter he has been featured at the Hovel, the Regina Folk Festival, and the Sasquatch Folk Festival.
Jan’s musical directing includes eleven years with the Banff World Television Festival. There he has performed in tributes for John Cleese, Bob Newhart, Dame Edna, Martin Short, Steve Allen and Kelsey Grammer.
