[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello Jamidwyer, welcome to Wikipedia!

I noticed nobody had said hi yet... Hi!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, Alf melmac 01:14, 6 November 2005 (UTC).

[edit] Hi

Hi, nice turtle picture. Since you have an account, you can go right ahead and make Mazunte, Oaxaca for yourself. Kappa 23:44, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Olmec & other photos

Hello. While you have contributed some nice photos at Olmec, not every photo contributed can be used. In particular, there are already two other colossal head photos in the article.

Moreover, neither photo you've inserted has any caption or any description and therefore adds, in my opinion, little to the article. What we really need are some detailed shots of Olmec artifacts: figurines in particular, or perhaps a shot of the "altars". Might you have something like this?? Madman 13:46, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Since it seems you think there are too many Olmec heads for people to handle, I'll move them to a gallery. Jamidwyer 22:16, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Jamidwyer
Hey, I think that's a fabulous idea. I was thinking along the same lines. Please do. I would love to see it. BTW, do you have any photos of Olmec artifacts? The Olmec figurines article could certainly use some. Thanks again, Madman 22:44, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
PS Just looked at the Olmec page. I think I will be moving the gallery to the bottom of the article, where galleries are typically situated (like the one you added to in Sunflower). Moreover, the two existing colossal head photos were at the right places, I believe: one at the start of the article - you know, big splash, most recognizable feature of Olmec -- and the other in the alternative speculations, where it highlighted the rather "African" features of the head. That other photo you added is just baffling, in part because it's backlit and just comes across as a black column. I'm not sure that it belongs on the page. More later, Madman 22:54, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
PPS Me again. I moved the "altar" photo you added to Olmec mythology over to La Venta, where there is already a decent-size discussion of this monument (aka Altar 4). However, I see that this image is listed for speedy deletion!! Could you change the label on the image to GFDL?? And do you have any more at home like this?? Madman 04:37, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
PPPS: It would be best to load these photos in Wikipedia Commons, where they would be available to all Wikipedias, whatever language. I particularly think Altar 4 is worthly of inclusion elsewhere. Thanks, Madman 04:39, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll try re-uploading the altar pic to Wikimedia Commons, but Wikimedia Commons surpassed my hassle threshhold last time I tried it.

It seems like you are very knowledgeable on Olmec culture, which is awesome, but it's possible your expertise has caused you to mistake your opinions for fact on some matters. For example, it doesn't matter if you think my picture is "baffling" or you think my citation is "good." It is a picture of an Olmec head. If I were looking for Olmec information, I would want to see as many Olmec heads as I could, and I think I'd be in the majority on that. And unscholarly as it is, I got the scraps of knowledge on that altar that I put up by Googling up the source I cited, which citation you removed. (I note that you don't cite any sources for your (much improved) altar factoids -- surely you weren't born with that knowledge (in which case your mother's diet should perhaps be cited for reasons of improving mankind)?)

The page you work so hard to keep at the status quo is a nice page. It doesn't have a bunch of rambling, redundant junk like other pages I've tried to fix, only to be beaten down by other people who have decided they own a page and they prefer it full of repetitive crap. But Wikipedia is meant for everyone to improve, not just the people who decide that some expertise gives them license to delete all changes that don't meet their arbitrary personal standards. This is a new trend (I blame the ability to subscribe to changes), and troubling. If it persists, Wikipedia will have all the errors and none of the sense of community that makes it worthwhile anyway.Jamidwyer 01:34, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Jamidwyer

I'm glad you think Olmec is not full of rambling, redundant junk. And yes I do think that most folks would like to see as many colossal head photos as possible (which is why I think your idea of a gallery is most excellent). And you are correct that the altar section of La Venta is not referenced. I will try to fix that.
And thanks again for the Altar image. If you wish, I can upload it to Commons. Do you have any further ones taken in Villahermosa?? I think I saw one with you or a friend of yours on the flickr site. Madman 03:12, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Hey, me again. I added your Monte Alban mask to the Mixtec article (in fact, it's the lead paragraph image). If you have any more artifacts shots, let me know. Thanks muchly, Madman 19:42, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. -Will Beback 05:57, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images

I see you've been removing some images from articles. I wonder why. If you feel there are too many images in an article, you might wish to transer some of the images to an image gallery at the Wikimedia Commons. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:18, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey, it looks like you've been removing your own nifty photos from articles. Is there some problem? Please explain, thanks. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:51, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sasquatch photos

If you were the person who took those photos of beck at sasquatch, you have good taste in music.

Thank you; you're awesome; Wikipedia is crushing my soul except for your kind, long-ago voice in the night. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jamidwyer (talkcontribs) 09:06, 7 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Reptile Zoo

Hi! An article on this zoo would be most welcome, but it's been deleted three times for a lack of content. Please take the time to expand this before it gets deleted again. Thanks. - Lucky 6.9 07:19, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reptile Zoo

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Reptile Zoo, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Reptile Zoo. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. [edit] Article deletions

Please read WP:Welcome and WP:CSD throughly. Pay special attention to WP:CSD#A1 (Articles line item 1) and WP:CSD#A7 (Articles line item 7) for further info on why your articles continue to be deleted. Thank you. --NMChico24 07:53, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

You can sign your posts on talk pages]] using four tildes (~~~~). An article needs content not just images. If you don't want to write content, put the images on a species page (for example, I added your images to talk:spitting cobra so that they could be added to the article if desired. jimfbleak 12:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
