Barron challenged Decatur (it was the other way around). Mention also that Barron was in Europe on business when the war of 1812 broke out. He did not return to the U.S. until after the war. Barron was much criticized for this. In his own defense, Barron claimed that he was in financial straits while in Europe, and did not have the money for a passage to the U.S. until after the War of 1812.
