Solinger competed as Miss Iowa Teen USA in the Miss Teen USA 1992 in pageant which was nationally broadcast from Biloxi, Mississippi on 25 August 1992. Although the pageant was televised live, the threat of Hurricane Andrew meant that the conclusion unable to be broadcast. Instead, what later because known in beauty pageants as the "Hurricane Option" was used where both Solinger and the other member of the top two, Angela Logan of Oklahoma were taped "winning" the title. Solinger was eventually declared the winner and her crowning shown.

Solinger was only the second teen from Iowa to place in the national pageant, and her state would not place again until 1995. The latest placement of Iowa was in 2003.

Solinger later won the Miss Iowa USA 1998 title, and competed in the Miss USA pageant alongside Shauna Gambill of California who had also previously held the Miss Teen USA title, in 1994. After completing her year as Miss Iowa USA, Jamie crowned her sister Jaclyn as Miss Iowa USA 1999. They are one of few pairs of sisters to compete at Miss USA, and the first to win the same title in subsequent years. It would not happen again until 2003-2004 when sisters Alicia and Justine Michioka won consecutive Miss Hawaii USA titles.
