James Stewart 5th High Steward of Scotland (c.1243 - 16 July 1309) was a Scottish noble, the son of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland.

James Stewart was a Guardian of Scotland during the First Interregnum. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, he at first submitted to King Edward I of England. However, he joined Sir William Wallace. After the defeat of Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk (1298) he joined Robert the Bruce. James Stewart's son Walter Stewart married Robert the Bruce's daughter, Marjorie Bruce.

James Stewart was married to Cecilia de Dunbar to whom he had a son, Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. He also had four children to his second wife Gille de Burgh - Sir John Stewart b. b 1309, d. c 1318; Andrew Stewart b. b 1309; Sir James Stewart b. b 1309; Gille Stewart b. b 1309.
