Rev. James S. Johnstone, D.D. (1809 - 1881) was Rev Dr John Robertson's successor as Minister of religion in Cambuslang from 1843. He was also made a Doctor of Divinity, the University of Glasgow seeming to have made a tradition of conferring a doctorate on the Ministers of Cambuslang.

Dr Johnstone was a large man, commonly seen riding about his parish in a large black cloak. He introduced heating to the church in 1845 and Gas lighting in 1858. He had a very large family. He is buried in the churchyard, along with some of them, under a large white marble monument and there is a bust of him in the Church porch.
