James and his brother John were born in Derbyshire, England. They were the grandsons of an Irish King. He was raised in England, but fought for Irish rights. He was knighted in 1493 by King Henry VII of England, for services in battle for the Tudor cause. He held lands in Wiltshire, England. James was made Lord Treasurer of Ireland in 1492 by King Henry VII of England he served until 1494. James was hailed as Earl of Ormonde by the Irish, but never attained that title as he was murdered by Piers Butler in 1497 to remove his claim to that Earldom.
