James McGarry

James McGarry (born 26 November 1971) is an Irish sportsperson. He is the current goalkeeper on the Kilkenny senior hurling team.

James McGarry was born in Bennetsbridge, County Kilkenny in 1971. He was educated locally and currently works as a self-employed JCB operator. He plays club hurling with his local Bennetsbridge Gaelic Athletic Association club, following in the footsteps of the famed Noel Skehan. McGarry first came to notice in 1995 when he won an All-Ireland junior championship medal with Kilkenny. Two years later in 1997 he made his senior inter-county debut for his native county, lining out as goalkeeper. In 1998 McGarry first tasted hurling success at senior level when he won his first Leinster Championship title. It was the first of six Leinster medals in-a-row.

He played in the All-Ireland finals of 1998 and 1999, but only ended up with two runners-up medals. He won his first All-Ireland title in 2000 when Kilkenny defeated Offaly in one of the most one-sided All-Ireland finals in decades. In 2002 McGarry won his first National Hurling League medal, before finishing off the year with a second All-Ireland medal. 2003 was a special year for McGarry as he won a second consecutive League title, as well as a third All-Ireland medal. He won his seventh and eighth Leinster medals in 2005 and 2006, before claiming his third league medal and fourth All-Ireland medal in 2006 also. McGarry has been nominated on several occasions for an All-Star Award but has yet to win one. He also won two Railway Cup medals as goalkeeper on the Leinster side.
