Connected with the house of Douglas by his marriage with the widow of the 5th Earl of Douglas and that of her daughter (the Fair Maid of Galloway) with the 8th Earl. He was created a Lord of Parliament in 1445, accompanied the 8th Earl of Douglas to Rome in 1450 and attended him to his fatal meeting with James II at Stirling in 1452.
