James Cook High School was opened in February 1968.
It was the first school to hire police officers to be staff members for drug trafficing in the school grounds.[citation needed]

- James Cook High School has sported many high Profile athletes over the years including Joe Rokocoko, Joe Ngalavao and Scott Dixon
- James Cook was also known as a basketball powerhouse in South Auckland, producing NBL star Prem Krishna and Poutu Pitman Edwards.
- James Cook has also produced college gridiron prospect Tuaine Fitzgerald who has been offered scholarships to Alcorn State and Penn State
