[edit] History and Geography

James College, named after Lord James of Rusholme, the University of York's first Vice-Chancellor, was built in several stages during the 1990s. Originally a graduate-only college, it admitted its first undergraduate residents in October 1993. Today it consists of twelve accommodation blocks lettered from "A" to "M" (missing out "I") located across a cable-stayed bridge from Wentworth College and close to Goodricke College and the University's sports centre.

[edit] College Spirit

James College has an unfortunate reputation at the University of York for having no college spirit, despite an active Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC). This is mainly due to James' lack of catering facilities, or a bar - although it is also attributed to the fact that James has some of the best accommodation on campus and its students may therefore be less inclined to mix socially. Though James College students claim that it is simply an excuse to take advantage of the facilities of other colleges at their expnsse. However, James does have a strong rivarly with Goodricke College, in a not dissimilar manner to that between Langwith and Derwent colleges.

[edit] College Events

Despite its perceived lack of spirit, James is home to the infamous Quad Dash, one of the most popular summer events on campus. It also holds various small events in the JCR and larger ones in association with other colleges.

[edit] Wildlife

In addition to one of the largest populations of students anywhere on campus, James College is also home to several hundred ducks, geese and other assorted wildfowl. In the summer term, particularly, it is not unusual to find whole flocks of birds patrolling the quads and pecking at kitchen windows.

[edit] Alumni

Since James College is relatively young, few (if any) of its alumni have yet had time to make their name in politics, the arts and entertainment.
