Sir James Reginald Alfred Bottomley, KCMG. (Born 12 January 1920). HM Diplomatic Service.

Educated King's College School, Wimbledon; Trinity College, Cambridge. Served with Inns of Court Regiment, RAC 1940-46. Dominions Office 1946; Pretoria 1948-50; Karachi 1953-55; Washington 1955-59; UK Mission to United Nations 1959; Dep High Commissioner, Kuala Lumpur 1963-67; Asst Under-Sec of State, Commonwealth Office (later FCO) 1967-70; Dep Under Sec of State FCO 1970-72; Ambassador to South Africa 1973-76; Perm UK Rep to UN and other international Organisations at Geneva 1976-78. Director Johnson Matthey PLC 1979-85. Member British Overseas Trade Board 1972. CMG 1965; KCMG 1973.

Son of Cecil Bottomley and Alice Thistle Bottomley, daughter of Richard Robinson. Married 1941 Barbara Evelyn Vardon. Three sons, two daughters.
