James Bohary

James Bohary (born 1940 in Brooklyn, New York) is a painter. He has studied graphic design, illustration, drawing, as well as art education (B.S. from New York University). He emerged from the New York Studio School in 1969, where he studied painting and drawing with Philip Guston.
His influences include: prehistoric art, Sassetta, Rembrandt, Cezanne, and Willem de Kooning.
His paintings are characterized by multi-layered impasto and movement. To create a piece, he takes time shaping and carving the paint, making rapid swipes, scraping on and off paint, sanding it, etc. He works on his paintings for years if necessary.
His paintings may be found in the following museums: The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Hood Museum in Hanover, N.H., The National Academy of Design in NYC, the Snite Museum at Notre Dame University, the Wellesley College Museum, the Indiana University Art Museum, among others.
His awards include: American Academy & Institute of Arts and Letters Award (1985), Certificate of Merit, National Academy of Design (1993), Elected as Full Member of National Academy of Design (1994).
Among the many places in which he has taught are: Queens College, Parsons School of Fine Arts, New York Studio School and Dartmouth College.
