Jama Ali Jama was elected as acting president of Puntland in 2001 but was overthrown by Abdullahi Yusuf after some months in office. Today, he is a parliamentarian and leads the opposition to Yusuf's policy. He was a former colonel in the Somali military. Mohammed siad Barre, the ex-Somali president, accused Jama of trying to overthrow him. Jama was imprisoned for 11 years.

He was educated in Moscow, and the Soviet Union promoted him in late 1980s to be the chief of socialism ideology in East Africa. He belongs to the Muse Sultan, a subclan of Osman Mahmud, which itself is part of Majeerteen Darod.
