Jadunath Sarkar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jadunath Sarkar (Bengali: যদুনাথ সরকার) was a Bengali Indian historian born on 10 December 1870 in Karchamaria, Natore (part of current day Bangladesh). He became a teacher in 1893 at Ripon College, Kolkata, instructing English literature after getting his degrees in English and History.

He is most remembered for his books, Aurangzib and Shivaji, which were about the history of the seventeenth century and cenetred around around two individuals -- Aurangzib traced the fall of the Mughal Empire and Shivaji, the rise of a nation under a heroic leader.

Sarkar has often been viewed as a supporter of the British, a view that was strengthened when he was knighted by the British Government. He had mostly praise for the English, whom he thought were instrumental in bringing progress in India.
