[edit] Trivia

[edit] Tattoos

Shaddix has numerous tattoos, many of which he gets done by Vanitykills' frontman Jassen Jensen (formerly Die Trying).

  • "Born to Rock" across his chest.
  • A diamond on his right forearm.
  • The Chinese symbol for "good" on the right side of his neck, "evil" on the left. His wife shares these tattoos.
  • A "good" and "evil" bird on each side of his chest.
  • A star glowing on top of his chest.
  • He also has a burned down house on his arm, symbolising his family life was when he grew up.
  • Stars on both his ear lobes.
  • The text "What does not kill me makes me stronger" on his left arm and "Born with nothing, die with everything" (which is also a Papa Roach song) on his right.
  • An old style microphone on his left forearm.
  • "L-O-V-E" on his right fist (one on each finger, except from the thumbs) and "H-A-T-E" on his left. This is connected to his belief that the human has both good and evil sides in which they must control. As he once stated; "I deal a lot with the line between good and evil. And I tiptoe down that line myself. I have a side that's responsible, a part that knows right from wrong, and I have my punk rock, 'fuck everything' side."
  • His wife's (Kelly) name in gothic letters.
  • A Butterfly (Mariposa in Spanish) on his neck, representing the town he was born in.

[edit] Quotes

On war
"My father was a Vietnam veteran and they were treated like shit when they got home. I don’t support the war or Bush, but I support our troops; I want them to come home soon."

On struggle
"I'm not looking for sympathy, just understanding."

On his music
"I'm super-flamboyant, super-happy, and super-pissed-off," he understates, "I'm off the hook at shows. I've done stupid things where our lawyer was going, 'You can't be doing that!' but I've also hugged a million kids. How Nirvana was when they came out - that new edge of giving kids a release of emotions - that's how I hope people connect with Papa Roach's music. I want to cause every emotion in people. I want them to fight, to fuck; I want to bring out their violence, their sadness, and their happiness."

On touring Ozzfest
"I was just frustrated from playing in front of rows of chairs every night with 40-year-old guys with their arms crossed going, 'We want Ozzy, we want Ozzy". There was one show where I was so sick of the crowd it made me want to just destroy them. So I pulled my pants down, took a shit on a towel and threw it in the crowd because that's how I felt about the show."

On struggles
“We were 6 feet under. A lot of people gave up on us, including fans and critics and show promoters and record labels.”

On singing/rapping
“The rapping's gone. I don't feel like rapping. I'm just over that, I just want to be a rocker. It's what I wanted to be when I was a kid.”

On the future
“This is my dream. I ain't giving up. I see a band like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they've had their ups and downs, but they've continued with heart. We look up to that. I see Papa Roach being around for another 15 years. We've always wanted to be a career band.”

On lovehatetragedy "flopping"
“It's kind of cool that we've quietly been selling a million albums. We knew (the album) wasn't going to debut at No. 1. I'm stoked to see us being successful again.”

On Getting Away With Murder
“I don't think we realized how far gone we were in people's eyes. We pretty much had to prove ourselves over again, from our fans to people in the music industry. It's been an uphill fight. Nobody handed anything to us on this record. It's been us just slugging it out in the trenches and playing shows and proving to people every day that this band is legit and we're not going away.”

On The Paramour Sessions being a more mature album
"I think this record definitely shows some growth as musicians and artists but we don't take ourselves too seriously, like "this is our more mature record". But it is always an evolution. If you want to call it mature, thats cool. But for me it is just rock and roll!"
