Jack Brennan

Jack Brennan is a fictional character in Larry Niven's Known Space universe, from the novel Protector.
Originally a Belter and human, he later becomes a Pak Protector after eating Tree-of-Life root.
As a Pak Protector, he covertly watches over Earth and the Belt for several hundred years, helping to guide humanity into a Golden Age that lasts until the first Man-Kzin War. During this times he samples humans every few decades and sends them back with no memory of the encounter.
