James Hamilton "Jimmy" Speirs, footballer, was born in Glasgow in 1886. A natural striker, he played for Rangers and Clyde, winning a Scottish cap in 1908. He was Bradford City’s Captain and goalscorer in the 1911 FA Cup Final.
In July 1909 he signed for City. He captained the side, and played in 86 League games, scoring 29 times. His career peaked when he scored the winning goal in the 1911 FA Cup final replay at Old Trafford.
In December 1912, Jimmy was sold to Leeds City for a reported fee of £1,400 – a huge amount at a time when the national average wage was just £2 per week.
At the outbreak of the Great War, Jimmy returned to his native Glasgow and enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in May 1917 and promoted to Sergeant. He was killed during the notorious Battle of Passchendaele on 10th August 1917. Jimmy is buried at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery, near Ypres in Belgium.
