[edit] Sydney regions

G'Day

I have been adding some information to some of the southern Sydney suburbs and Sydney Regions.

I would like to request a change to the suburbs categories box for 'City of Rockdale'. This box should be linked to Southern Sydney rather than South-Eastern Sydney. Just like Kogarah and Hurstville already do. It would also be really good to have an extra link to the 'St George' region (if possible) for all 3 local govt areas of 'City of Rockdale', 'Municipality of Kogarah' and 'City of Hurstville'.

Also, in 'Regions of Sydney' category box there should be a link to Upper North Shore. We already have Lower North Shore and North Shore there. I have created the page but can't link it.

In the 'City of Rockdale' can you please include the suburb of Kingsgrove? Also, in the 'City of Hurstville', I think the suburb box would look neater without the localities (which aren't really that well-known anyway). A minor edit for local government area of Hunters Hill. It should not have an apostrophe in Hunter's.

Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by J Bar (talkcontribs).

I'm not really sure. I'm not in Sydney (from Adelaide and have only spent a month in Sydney but it was at Bonnyrigg, New South Wales the whole time) so I don't know much about geographic accuracy. When I created the templates, I just copied the list of suburbs from City of Rockdale and used "South-Eastern Sydney because the City of Rockdale article said so - actually it didn't I did a copying error so I fixed it to southern. If you think there are suburbs missing then add them and discuss at WikiProject Sydney or User:Nickj, the Sydney suburbs guru. Your changes seem reasoned, but I'm not really the best person to know about Sydney geographical consideration, so wait a bit. Regards, Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:04, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi J Bar! I've added Upper North Shore to the Sydney regions template, and left my comments at Template talk:Sydney regions. I agree with you concerning the Hurtsville localities - those localities didn't make it to our list of Sydney suburbs, and so don't have articles. I guess they originally came from the dodgy DLG site. JPD (talk) 10:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your input guys. I have some good reference material on my local area Arncliffe/Rockdale/St George. I'll keep adding more stuff when I get the chance.J Bar 00:57, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Can I please request another change to the suburbs box for 'Municipality of Kogarah' to remove the localities that appear in red, which are not suburbs? Also, if possible can the 'St George' region link be added next to 'Southern Sydney' for local government boxes: 'City of Rockdale', 'Municipality of Kogarah' and 'City of Hurstville'? J Bar 06:22, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jim! I've just removed the red links from the Kogarah box. You could have done this yourself by editing Template:Sydney Kogarah suburbs - there's no need to ask for permission or anything like that. As for including "St George", I suggested at Template talk:Sydney regions that it replace "Southern Sydney", rather than have both. What do you think about that idea? JPD (talk) 13:58, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
I definitely agree that suburbs/LGAs in the St George area should appear on both the St George and the Southern Sydney articles, and that both of these should appear on the Sydney regions template! I was talking about the boxes like Template:Sydney Kogarah suburbs. You are suggesting having the heading on that box say: "Suburbs and localities within the Municipality of Kogarah | St George | Southern Sydney | Sydney". To me, this seems a bit long for a heading, and it would be sufficient to include only the more specific region name, giving: "Suburbs and localities within the Municipality of Kogarah | St George | Sydney". The fact that the St George area is part of "Southern Sydney" should then be mentioned on the St George page, and the Southern Sydney page does indeed provide links back to the St George LGAs. JPD (talk) 11:09, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi again! I've made the modifications in the way that looks best to me - if you're not happy with it, feel free to make more changes. JPD (talk) 12:08, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] prod warning

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Cashed Up Bogan, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Cashed Up Bogan. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Asa01 05:42, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I've seen that marketing research featured in an article in The Sydney Morning Herald also. It was also used to describe Shane Warne in another Herald article recently. But these are not the only places that the term has been used lately. I've seen it used on a number of blogs/forums, magazine articles and even on The Chaser's War on Everything TV show.

I don't feel passion for the article remaining. Maybe it is enough to include it in the Bogan article. I suppose you might think differently when it appears in the next edition of the Macquarie dictionary. J Bar 23:15, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not desperate to have it deleted, but the article needs to have better resources added, and looks perilously like it is going to become an "original research-cruft" article where people drop in and just add their own opinions. I mean look at the new Kath and Kim chat that recently got added. This can then never be deleted because who authoritively can say (given that the term is not clearly defined in any external, credible, resource) that it is not relevant. I checked a number of blogs, etc, and my thoughts were that though many used the phrase "cashed up bogan", repeated usage of a phrase does not quite constitute notability of whatever concept they might be refering to (and Shane Warne does not fit the definition given in the newspaper article linked from Bogan). But if others want the article kept I wont argue. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Asa01 23:29, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Railway stations

Hi J Bar - I've noticed you've done some great work on the St George area and have also contributed some good pictures. I've been doing stuff on the CityRail network and I need some pictures of stations on the Illawarra line. If you are ever around a railway station and can take a picture of the platforms of a station, we'd love to have your contribution. An example shot of the sort of thing that would be good is Beecroft_railway_station,_Sydney. Thanks for any help you can give! (If you can help, the List of Sydney railway stations has all the stations on there - click on the specific stations - if they have photos in the infobox, we don't need any for that station; if they don't then we are in need of one.) (JROBBO 10:15, 1 August 2006 (UTC))

G'Day JROBBO,

I have been taking photos of the railway stations in the St George area, during my visits to local suburbs, but I just have not had time to download them yet. In some cases, I have 2 or 3 shots from the one station. Should I download all three shots? What do you think? J Bar 22:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your good work. To answer your question - yes, download them all (preferably in Wikimedia Commons if you can, with the category of "Train stations in Sydney" - but if not then I'll transfer them) - if there's too many on one page then they can go in the talk page until there's enough of an article to warrant all of them. (JROBBO 05:30, 2 August 2006 (UTC))
If it's easier, I'll transfer them to WM Commons myself - just upload them here. There isn't a quicker way, I'm sorry! (JROBBO 05:45, 2 August 2006 (UTC))
Thanks for the photos - I really appreciate your effort! I'll fix up the userboxes in the articles and add them to Commons. (JROBBO 02:44, 3 August 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Barnstar again

The Photographer's Barnstar
Awarded to J Bar for his wonderful photographic ontributions to stations in Sydney Sydney railway station photos. Well done! (JROBBO 03:11, 18 August 2006 (UTC))

Well done... this is well deserved.

By the way, if you ever get around to doing the Como area (you have got fairly close at different stages), you might like to look for the old railway station. There are substantial remains of it just south of the old railway bridge. The station moved in the 70s to its present site. (JROBBO 03:15, 18 August 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Image:OatleyR1.gif

Do you have a higher qualiy version that you can upload. The gif format is not suited to photographs. JPEG would be better. Harryboyles 05:53, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I do. Thanks for the feedback. I'll make sure I upload them in the jpeg in future.J Bar 06:00, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Much, much better :-) Harryboyles 06:16, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photos

Thanks for all the great Sydney photos, J Bar! I don't suppose there's any chance you could get some good photos for the new article at Parliament House, Sydney? JPD (talk) 11:03, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do. I work in the city, so I should be able to do it sometime soon.J Bar 00:25, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Jim! It definitely improves the article. JPD (talk) 15:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Marrickville, New South Wales

Congratulations on the photos you have added to the Marrickville article. Good work. God bless the photographers! --WikiCats 10:15, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

So do I. I was just in Sydney. It seems I have more photos that time to upload them. The photo on my user page was published in the Gold Coast Bulletin. --WikiCats 05:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

[edit] Commons

Hi Jim - thanks again for all the photos. I have a suggestion that you might like to take up. With the large amount of photos you are uploading, you might at this stage want to sign up to Wikimedia Commons and upload your photos there. This enables your photos to be used in any Wikimedia project and not just Wikipedia - so people from other language projects, Wikitravel, etc. can all use the photos. You need to go here and sign up (as "J Bar") and then you click on "Upload file" on the left and upload your files as per normal. You can use categories like [[Category:Sydney]] for Sydney-related photos and [[Category:Train stations in Sydney]] for railway station pics. This will save those users who want to use them on other projects a lot of time having to download your photos and then reupload them in other projects. I have done all your photos on railway stations up until today, so you won't need to put them up. (JROBBO 06:23, 5 September 2006 (UTC))

G'Day JROBBO
I've been using Wikimedia Commons to upload my photos as you suggested. Unfortunately, I've lost some photos off my PC after it crashd recently and can't copy any other old photos over to Commons. Thanks mate. Can you explain how I could transfer some of my photos I already loaded in Wikipedia to Commons? There's a couple of Cooks River railway bridge photos that you might want to include in the railways categories photos. They were loaded by me into the articles for Wolli Creek and Tempe. > J Bar 05:29, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately there isn't an easy way to do it. You'll have to download them all, and then reupload them to Commons with a link to the original photo on Wikipedia to show it is a duplicate (the one on WP only will eventually be deleted I think, leaving the one on Commons available for all projects.) You can find a list of your photos you uploaded by clicking "My Contributions" at the top of the screen and going back a bit down the list. (JROBBO 00:25, 16 September 2006 (UTC))

[edit] St Peters/Erskineville

Hi J Bar - thanks for the photos of these stations. I had a request - both of these stations have unfinished platforms which are historically notable, and may also be used in the future. Unfortunately you may not have known about them when you took the photos. If you go past again, would you be able to get a shot of them? That would be great. I'm really grateful for the photos so thanks anyway. (JROBBO 05:39, 5 October 2006 (UTC))

If you're after anything in a station that's worth taking a picture of, you might like to check out www.nswrail.net which has some historical aspects of different stations as well as now abandoned platforms and stations. (JROBBO 05:52, 5 October 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Belmore, New South Wales

Hiya, the images you've lumped into the Belmore, New South Wales article are okay in Internet Explorer, but they definitely break things like the table of contents in opera/mozilla/firefox (images overlap it). Don't know if you were just dropping it there and planning to fix it later so I'll leave it to you. And also, with your train station pics, you should beware of harsh sunlight - those overexposed roofs really hurt the quality of the pic. Otherwise, keep up the pic-snapping =) -Blu3d 08:09, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
