J. Alexander's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

J. Alexander's is a casual dining restaurant chain headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded by three native Nashville businessmen, Jack C. Massey, Earl Beasley Jnr and John Neff, J. Alexander's is a publicly owned corporation whose stock trades on the American Stock Exchange (symbol: JAX). According to their online profile, "J. Alexander's is the vision of a group of people who have a desire to provide the casual dining restaurant guest with a higher quality dining experience and outstanding professional service. Our concept is uniquely positioned between the heavily themed casual dining restaurants and the fine dining white tablecloth dinnerhouses. The company serves American-style food with a contemporary twist, taking advantage of our rich multi-cultural heritage in the development of items for our classic American menu".

With only twenty-eight restaurants in twelve states, J. Alexander's is not as well known to the American public as casual dining giants Chili's or T.G.I. Friday's, however the corporation's insistence on the highest quality products available, coupled with a rigorous adherence to its admittedly stringent standards for professional service, have earned J. Alexander's the universal respect of the American restaurant industry.

One of the corporation's oldest stores is located in Toledo, Ohio, and remains one of the city's few culinary bright spots. Despite Toledo's boasting the most restaurants per capita in the United States, most are of poor quality and cannot come close to rivaling the superior food, stellar service and oustanding wine list that J. Alexander's offers. The position of General Manager of the Toledo location has been a stepping stone for internal career advancement, as evidenced by corporate heavyweights Ralph Carnevale and Ian Dodson, both of whom currently occupy prominent slots in the J. Alexander's corporate hierarchy following stints at the helm of the corporation's Toledo store. The current General Manager is F. Flannigan Clifford, late of the corporation's Memphis location.

But it is not just the internal corporate management that has made J. Alexander's a legendary fixture throughout the restaurant landscape. More so, the legend lies in the quality and execution of the service staff and kitchen staff, as well as the world famous "Porkchop Mandy Sandwich". The sandwich is a classic and consists of a pan seared "Mandy Cut" (a high quality primal cut taken from the belly of a female swine, known for its good flavor, high fat content, and whorishly tasty appearance) porkchop, caramelized onions, and finished with three 6 inch pickles.

  • The first J. Alexander's Restaurant was opened in Nashville in 1991
  • J. Alexander's has a seemingly modest rate of physical expansion, and has continually pledged not to curtail or detract from in any way, shape or form its hard-earned and well-deserved reputation of top to bottom excellence in the name of growth
  • Neither the Toledo J. Alexander's nor any other of its locations accepts reservations, however the corporation's stores all maintain a policy of call-ahead seating, which has proven itself successful
