Jürgen Werner (August 15, 1935 – May 28, 2002) was a German football player, journalist and official.
Full back Jürgen Werner made it through to the first-team of Hamburger SV from the youth, like Uwe Seeler did, and was a reliable servant for the North Germans in his eight first-team years from 1955 to 1963, lifting the German title trophy with the club in 1960. On the verge of becoming a teacher he refused to sign a professional contract with his club for the then founded Bundesliga in 1963, retiring as a consequence of that. Besides his teacher profession he picked up a role as (time-to-time) journalist for weekly Die Zeit, later on, and became Chairman of the Technical Committee of the German Football Association in 1986.
For West Germany Jürgen Werner played in 4 games in between 1961 and 1963, making the squad of his nation for the 1962 FIFA World Cup but staying without any appearance due to an injury he had picked up in training.
Jürgen Werner died of cancer on May 28, 2002. In compliment to Jürgen Werner, the academy of Hamburger SV got named Jürgen Werner Schule.
