There is a great difference between U.S. Army Rangers and U.S. Army Special Forces, one which many does not seem to realize actually exist. Both are elite infantry but with VERY different individual training and doctrine. Their missions are disticntful. Below, some have been listed:
Missions of the Rangers:
... LARGE formations of men (up to battalion size) performing:
Airfield capture, Stationary surveillance, Airborne drops, Air Assault, Direct Action, Raids, Support of conventional infantry units, HUMINT etc.
(Only Ranger and Special Forces qualified personnel serve in Long-Range Surveillance Units/Companies/Detachments)
Missions of Special Forces:
.... SMALL formations of men performing:
Counter-Terrorism, Counter-Insurgency, Subversion, Human Intelligence gathering (HUMINT), Naval Incursions, Kidnappings, VIP and Force Protection etc.
Both form part of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, and both are conciddered to be Special Operations Forces, but as said, the standards, doctrine and complicity of operations are very different from one another!
A comparrison between U.S. Army Rangers and British SAS is an ever greater gap!
