[edit] History

Although Halifax has been home to a children's hospital since 1909, the original Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children building opened in 1970, with the help of a generous donation of $8 million from Dorothy Johnson Killam, wife of the late Izaak Walton Killam.

In 1996 the IWK Health Centre and the adjacent Grace Maternity hospital merged.

[edit] Facility

The facility has undergone numerous expansions in the last few decades. A new parkade and atrium were constructed in the last couple of years, and a new 48,000 square foot building linking the two main buildings is currently under construction.

[edit] Education & Research

The IWK is a respected centre for its world-class research into disorders and diseases affecting children and women. As a teaching institution, the IWK is affiliated with Dalhousie University and serves as a primary clinical resource for pediatric and obstetric teaching of a broad range of health professions including medicine, nursing, other allied health services and child life.

[edit] Location

The IWK Health Centre is located in the south end of Halifax — an area not far from the centre of the city.

The Health Centre’s front entrances face University Avenue between Robie Street and Tower Road. There are four entrances off University Avenue:

5980 (Women’s and Maternity Site) and 5850 (Children’s Site) — which take you to the main floor of the Health Centre. Entrances at either end of the Dr. Richard B. Goldbloom Research and Clinical Care Pavilion, adjacent to the IWK public parkade. You are welcome to use either entrance. Please note: There is no access via the Children's Site entrance, 5850 University Avenue on the weekends.

Another general patient entrance is located on South Street. When you come in this entrance you will be on the first floor. This patient entrance, NOT THE EMERGENCY ENTRANCE, closes at 5 pm. After this time, you need to use one of the University Avenue entrances.

The Children’s Emergency is located on South Street. Please note: The Children’s Emergency Department entrance is not for general patient use and is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. The Emergency entrance for Women’s and Maternity Services is on University Avenue.

A heliport (ICAO code CIW2) is situated on the roof of the western portion of the hospital.
