Ivan Doroschuk, also known as Ivan, was born in Illinois, USA and at a young age he and his family moved to Canada, settling in the city of Montreal, Quebec, where their mother became a much-beloved member of the music faculty at Montreal's prestigious McGill University.

In high school, in the mid-seventies, Ivan and his brothers Colin and Stefan formed a band called Wave 21. Once out of high school they changed the name to Men Without Hats. Over the next few years the band lineup changed around but Ivan was always present as the lead singer of the band. From 1980 to 1991 Ivan released seven albums with Men Without Hats. He also wrote Mitsou's first English-language single "A Funny Place (The World Is)" and the title track of her 1990 album Terre Des Hommes. In 1991 the band broke up and Ivan released a solo album called The Spell. In 2003 Men Without Hats reunited and released their newest album, No Hats Beyond This Point.
