[edit] Transport
Itarsi is the biggest railway junction in Madhya Pradesh, at the crossing of important east-west and north-south routes. It is connected via broad gauge lines to Bhopal and Delhi to the north, Bhusawal and Mumbai to the west, and the railway junctions of Nagpur to the south and Jabalpur to the east. Rail services from Mumbai to Calcutta and Delhi to Chennai pass through Itarsi.
The city is currently represented by SOPA ex-chairman and veteran BJP leader Shri G S Sharma (from Sharma family of Hoshangabad fame) in the legislative assembly who won 2003 elections with a record margin. In 2004 the city was in the news on national TV due to a MPLADs scam involving Sartaj Singh and some of his cronies.
