Consumption of Italian beer, though considered a growing phenomenon, is not as widespread as other European neighbours, mainly because of historical preference for wine in the country.
The oldest and most popular brewery in Italy is Birra Peroni, today owned owned by SABMiller group), that is also owner of the worldwide brand Nastro Azzurro. Other notable breweries and beer brands are:

- Splugen (owned by Poretti group)
- Forst
- Ichnusa (Sardinia only, owned by Heineken group)
- Menabrea is 150 years old brewery and since 1997 it won various title in the world as best beer
