Italian Somaliland rupia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rupia was the currency in Italian Somaliland from 1909 to 1925. It replaced the Indian rupee at par. One rupia = 64 bese, like 1 rupee = 64 paisa (before decimalisation). The Maria Theresa thaler was also used before the rupia. The rupia was replaced by the Italian Somaliland lira. Other colonial currencies were used in Italian Somaliland, including the East African shilling and the Italian Somaliland somalo later. Finally, the Somali shilling was issued after independence.
Coins were issued in values of 1 besa, 2 bese, 4 bese, 1/4 rupia, 1/2 rupia, and 1 rupia. Banknotes were issued in values of 1 rupia, 5 rupias, and 10 rupia by Banca d'Italia, Somalia Italiana Branch. 10 rupias and 20 rupias were printed but not issued. All banknotes are very rare today.
