Itabira

Itabira is a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is located 112 km (72 miles) east of the state capital Belo Horizonte. It has a population of 104,800 (IBGE estimate 2005).

Itabira is best known for Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), one of the world's largest metallurgical conglomerates which was founded in the town in 1942. Itabira is also the hometown of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, a Brazilian poet of the 20th century.
