In 1928, when Playland-at-the-Beach opened, the ice cream was a much sought-after treat. George Whitney, one of the park's business owners, experimented with ice cream novelties when he came up with something extra-special — "It's-It!" he exclaimed!

Whitney's invention was found only at San Francisco's Ocean Beach. When Playland was demolished in 1972, the name was passed on to George Mavros, who continued the tradition of hand-dipping the ice cream in chocolate near Ocean Beach. In 1974, Charles Shamieh and his brothers (Jim, Bill and Chuck) bought the "It's-It" name and eventually built a production facility in Burlingame. The company website claims to be: "The official food of San Francisco."

It's-It ice cream sandwiches are available in the following flavors:

  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Mint
  • Cappucino

Vanilla is available in boxes of 3 at Bay Area grocery stores or in boxes of 10 at Bay Area Costco stores. Individual sandwiches in all flavors can be found in many convenience stores.

The It's-It Ice Cream company also produces other ice cream novelties:

  • Super Sundae: an ice cream bar on a stick, rolled in peanuts
  • Big Daddy: a large square ice cream sandwich
  • Super Cone: a large vanilla cone, dipped in chocolate, and sprinkled with peanuts
  • Chips IT: a large ice cream sandwich between 2 round chocolate chip cookies; this is not dipped in chocolate.

The company has expanded its sales to include fifteen states.

Their website now has sales for overnight shipping via FedEx, or for pickup in Burlingame. The minimum order is one case (24 It's IT sandwiches). They will deliver locally in the Bay Area with a minimum order of 8 cases.
