Description: Shaded relief map of Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec
Caption: The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the narrowest part of Mexico between the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico) and the Pacific Ocean. It is also a flat stretch of land that has long drawn the interest of would-be canal builders. Nowaday there is a plan to build a highway from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca on the Pacific Ocean.
