Islip, pronounced "I-slip" (IPA pronunciation:[aɪ slĭp]), is a census-designated place and hamlet located in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York, on the South Shore of Long Island. The population was 20,575 at the 2000 census.

Islip is located at GR1.
(40.737764, -73.219543)According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.9 km² (5.8 mi²). 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (6.25%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 20,575 people, 6,868 households, and 5,302 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,471.1/km² (3,808.8/mi²). There were 7,026 housing units at an average density of 502.4/km² (1,300.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.67% White, 4.90% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.02% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.67% of the population.
There were 6,868 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.38.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $65,657, and the median income for a family was $72,361. Males had a median income of $49,424 versus $33,600 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,383. About 2.6% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.

In CNN Money's 2005 list of the "Best Places to Live," the small hamlet of Islip was named the safest place to live in the US.

Islip's school system consists of 5 schools. The district has a K-1 center for kindergarten and first grade, two elementary schools for grades 2-5, a middle school for grades 6-8, and a high school for grades 9-12. The district's mascot is the Buccaneers.
