Islam in the Republic of Macedonia

Muslims in Macedonia form nearly one third (between 30 and 33%) of the Former Yugoslav Republic´s total population. So after Albania (65-70%) and Bosnia-Hercegovina (44-49%) it has the third largest Muslim population compared with other European countries. A few northwestern and western regions of Macedonia have Muslim majorities. During the times of Ottoman Turkish rule (1371-1912) even two thirds of Macedonia´s population were Muslims.
