[edit] Statement of the problem
- The existing naming convention for U.S. settlements states:
The canonical form for cities in the United States is [[City, State]] (the "comma convention") (exceptions include Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York City). Those cities that need additional disambiguation include their county or parish (for example Elgin, Lancaster County, South Carolina and Elgin, Kershaw County, South Carolina).
- The main settlements naming convention allows for variations within regions and specific countries.
- Historical support: The existing convention was drafted some time ago and did not receive consensus approval, although it was favored by a majority of discussants at the time. (Can someone clarify whether consensus was the requirement at the time of the drafting?)
- Since drafting of the existing convention:
- A large number of articles were created by a bot according to the existing convention.
- Wikipedia has attracted considerably more editors in general, and on this topic in particular.
- Current support/status/legitimacy/consensus:
- Various discussions and surveys in recent months suggest a lack of consensus for the existing convention, regardless of the original legitimacy of the existing convention.
- There is no consensus for any one alternative to the existing convention. A number of alternatives have been offered in recent months, but none has gained consensus support.
- A growing number of discussions are ongoing at individual articles with unique names move these articles to titles with only the city name.
