Ishi Yama Ryu

Ishi Yama Ryu Battojutsu (石山流抜刀術) is a modern sword style with a firm grounding in tradition. In its curriculum, practitioners study Kata, Tameshigiri, sparring, Aikijutsu, and Heiho (strategy).
[edit] Swordsmanship
Ishi Yama Ryu Battojutsu was founded in San Francisco by American martial artist Russell McCartney, who used the style to surpass the previous cut record of 1,000 cuts (Senbongiri) in 85 minutes with 1,181 cuts. Ishi Yama Ryu swordsmanship is taught in such a way as to give the beginning student the firmest foundation possible. Beginning with the 5 basic positions of the sword and moving on to the eight basic cuts, the beginning student immediately gets the vital information about how to swing with "cutting" dynamic. From that point onward, the student is given progressively more advanced kata with one, two, and three cuts in the kata. The kata also begin to take on levels of movement complexity with advanced turning, timing changes, and more efficient transitions.
[edit] Tameshigiri
Tameshigiri in Ishi Yama Ryu is not meant to test the cutting ability of one's sword, or even to test one's cutting power. True Tameshigiri in Ishi Yama Ryu is about cutting through multiple targets placed all around ones-self, using different cuts and changing timings. Typically, one does not measure their distance to the target with one's sword, as some other styles do, because one would not have time to do that in a combat situation.
