Isenheim Altarpiece

The Isenheim Altarpiece is a painting by the German artist Matthias Grünewald.

Considered one of his greatest works, he painted the altarpiece in the year 1515 for the Monastery of St. Anthony. The Antonine monks of the monastery were noted for their treatment of sufferers of skin disease, such as ergotism. The altarpiece has two sets of wings, displaying three configurations. The outermost wings show a Crucifixion scene, flanked by images of Saint Anthony and Saint Sebastian. When the outermost wing are opened, scenes of the Annuncation, the Incarnation, and Resurrection are displayed. The innermost section of the altarpiece included representations of the Temptation of Saint Anthony and the Meeting of Saint Anthony and the Hermit Paul, as well as sculptural works by Nicolas Hagenau.

It is currently on display at the Unterlinden Museum of Colmar, Alsace, France.
