Irving Plaza

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irving Plaza is a 1,000-capacity club/ballroom at 17 Irving Place and East 15th Street in New York City that was built in 1914.

It is adjacent to Union Square Park. The venue, which is open to all ages, hosts many local and touring, theatre, dance and music performing events.

It was converted in the late 70's from an old Polish dance hall to a rock venue. Irving Plaza is as much a legend as the artists who have played here -- Bob Dylan, Debbie Harry, and Johnny Cash.

The building's history is as diverse as its booking schedule: Over the years, the 3-level auditorium has served as Polish Army Veterans headquarters, a Yiddish theater, a burlesque house (Gypsy Rose Lee stripped here), and a boxing arena.

Today it's one of the prime midsize venues in the northeast, perfect for national acts seeking a more intimate venue or smaller bands increasing their mass appeal. From a patron's standpoint, it's no less exceptional. Sound is excellent, and there isn't a bad sightline in the house.
