Irob (woreda)

Irob is one of the 36 woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. This woreda is named after the Irob people.

Located in the Misraqawi Zone at the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian highlands, Irob is bordered on the south by Saesi Tsaedaemba, on the west by Gulomahda, on the north and east by Eritrea, and on the southeast by the Afar Region. The major town in Erob is Alitena.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 23,663, of whom 12,216 were males and 11,447 were females; 857 or 3.62% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 19.6%. With an estimated area of 933.45 square kilometers, Erob has an estimated population density of 25.4 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 141.59.[1]
