Our Trip to the Sandy Grounds Museum Introduction to Sandy Ground_ On November 21, 2006, class 610 of the science and technology academy attended the trip to the Sandy Grounds Museum. The Sandy Ground Museum of African American History is located at 1538 Woodrow Rd. Staten Island, NY 10309. The Sandy Ground Establishment and Foundation_ Sandy Ground is a small, but very historic and significant community. Sandy Ground was originally established by freed African Americans in the early 1900s. Sandy Ground was developed to become a typical farming establishment. It was crucial to obtain fertile soil to plant crops, right? What can African American farmers plant in SANDY GROUND? Strawberries were what living in the beginning of Sandy Ground relied on. The farmers planted strawberries on the sandy ground and dug it out to be transferred in crates and wheel barrows. It was a very wonderful trade, named after the brothers whom decided to plant strawberries present day Sandy Ground was now known as Harrisville. The farming age stopped when other African Americans from Maryland and Delaware immigrated to Sandy Ground and settled there… The Age of Oyster The immigrants from Delaware and Maryland decided to start an oyster industry. Oysters were the currency for Indian tribes alongside with wampum. The oyster trade was very significant and successful; therefore, Harrisville was replaced with the title Little Africa. The fishers made money and a living, until “white” people traveled towards that area. Within a short time, Little Africa or Harrisville was segregated and African Americans were not allowed to fish oyster. Blacksmiths and their Importance_ Black Smiths were a crucial part of communication in Little Africa. As slaves, African Americans relied on blacksmiths to communicate to their relatives situated at other plantations. The blacksmith used anvils and were crucial; incidentally, the Sandy Ground Museum once was the property of Joe Bishop, until he sold it to the Sandy Ground Historic al Museum.
