Irati

There are two cities named Irati in Southern Brazil. One is in the State of Santa Catarina and the other is in the State of Paraná. This article is about Irati, Paraná, Brazil.
Irati sprang up in the 1890s as a railroad town along the São Paulo/Rio Grande do Sul railroad line. The name, Irati, comes from the Tupi language and reportedly means "river of honey." (Apparently there were many bees in the region).
The city, population est. 54805 in 2006 based on Census of 2000, is located at South latitude 25o27'56" and West longitude 50o37'51". Irati is known locally as "Pérola do Sul" or Pearl of the South.
