Iraqi State Internal Security

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The State Internal Security of Iraq (or Amn) was an intelligence agency during Baath control of Iraq. Previously under the control of Nadhim Kzar, it was modernised under Saddam Hussein. By 1973 he had reformed the agency with the help of the head of the KGB, Andropov, because of the terms of the Iraqi-Soviet Friendship Treaty signed in 1972.

The clauses stated that:

  • The Internal Security would be restricted on the KGB's recommendations
  • The KGB would supply equipment for surveillance and interrogation
  • Iraqi personnel would be trained by Soviet personnel
  • There would be an exchange of intelligence information
  • Iraqi embassy personnel would be assisted by Soviet agents operating where the Soviet Union had no representation.
