Iowa Highway 64

Iowa Highway 64 is a state highway that runs from east to west across East Central Iowa. Iowa 64 is approximately 64 miles long and traverses two counties in East Central Iowa. The eastern terminus of Iowa 64 is at the Savanna-Sabula Bridge over the Mississippi River near Sabula where it meets Illinois Route 64. The western terminus of Iowa 64 is at its interchange with U.S. Highway 151 at Anamosa.

From its western terminus, Iowa 64 proceeds to the east for 8 miles and meets Iowa Highway 38. Iowa 38 is multiplexed with Iowa 64 for the next 2 miles to the east and then its northbound route splits off to the left. Iowa 64 continues east for another 5 miles and arrives in the town of Wyoming. Upon arriving in Wyoming, Iowa 64 meets with another north-south state highway, this time Iowa Highway 136. At the eastern end of Wyoming, the Iowa 64/Iowa 136 multiplex comes to a three-way stop, or a T intersection where the original stretch of Iowa 64 comes to an end, requiring motorists to turn left or right. Iowa 136 splits off to the right and heads south but Iowa 64 splits off to the left and heads north very briefly before curving right and heading eastbound once again.
Five miles after its departure from Wyoming, Iowa 64 crosses the border from Jones County into Jackson County. Iowa 64 passes through the towns of Monmouth and Baldwin and bypasses the little village of Nashville. After that, Iowa 64 arrives in Maquoketa, the county seat for Jackson County. Upon arrival in Maquoketa, Iowa 64 passes an interchange to a new four lane version of U.S. Highway 61 which was completed in 1999.
At the eastern city limits of Maquoketa, Iowa 64 intersects with Iowa Highway 62 which heads strictly northbound from Maquoketa and Iowa 64 towards Bellevue. After Maquoketa, Iowa 64 proceeds to eventually meet up with County Road Z20 (formerly Iowa Highway 113) just outside of Spragueville and travel through the towns of Preston, and Miles. About nine miles after the small town of Miles, Iowa 64 meets with U.S. Highway 67, which goes toward Clinton if motorists turned right or southbound onto the U.S. Highway.
The Iowa 64 eastbound and U.S. 67 northbound multiplex continues to the east for about a quarter of a mile and at the very next intersection, U.S. 67 ends at its northern terminus, and Iowa 64 meets U.S. Highway 52. Off to the left goes U.S. 52 northbound towards Bellevue but eastbound Iowa 64 and southbound U.S. 52 continue as a multiplex to the east into the small Mississippi River town of Sabula. Iowa 64/U.S. 52 curves to a sharp left and heads north past two backwaters of the Mississippi River, Sabula Lakes and Sheepshead Bay. After the backwaters, the Iowa 64/U.S. 52 multiplex curves to the right, heading east once again, and crosses over the Mississippi River via the Savanna-Sabula Bridge. At the point where the states of Iowa and Illinois and the counties of Jackson and Carroll meet, Iowa 64 comes to its eastern terminus where it meets Illinois Route 64. Illinois 64 and U.S. 52 continue to proceed eastbound into the small Mississippi River town of Savanna, where it immediately intersects Illinois Route 84.

Illinois Route 64 continues eastbound after the Mississippi River and Savanna, Illinois, and traverses all the way across the northern part of the state to Chicago. Illinois 64 and U.S. 52 continue to multiplex each other until they reach the town of Brookville at which point Illinois 64 continues off to the east and U.S. 52 southbound veers off to the right or southeast and eventually ends up in the southern suburbs of Chicago, particularly Joliet. Illinois 64 actually goes into the city of Chicago itself. In the city of Chicago, Illinois 64 is named North Avenue for most of the way through the city until it makes its way towards Lake Michigan. As soon as it reaches Lincoln Park, Illinois 64 turns left onto LaSalle Drive, and then veers off to the east, towards the lakefront, where it meets Chicago's Lake Shore Drive, also known as U.S. Highway 41, and that interchange is the eastern terminus of Illinois 64. Although Iowa 64 and Illinois 64 provide Eastern Iowans and Northwestern Illinoisans a direct link to Chicago, particularly the ones who live on or near Highway 64, it is not known how many people actually take the whole stretch of Highway 64 all the way to Chicago nowadays with the existence of the interstate system. Many of those residents probably eventually grab Interstate 88 somewhere in Northern Illinois.
