[edit] History
Antoine Lussier and Sebastien Chaput formed Ion Dissonance during the late summer of 2001 with the intention of creating which was more complex and daring than what they have done before. JF Richard would join shortly after on drums. With these members, their sound started to take shape. But they still required more a few more individuals to fill some parts. These were Gabriel McCaughry doing vocals and Sebastien Painchaud doing Bass guitar. With completing their first official line-up, the band released a demo CD named .357 which was quickly put together in 2002 for promotional purposes to various zines, labels and individuals around North America. This demo is now out of print but was released on mp3.com[1]. Within in no time, they received positive reviews and reactions. In this short time, they had to pick a correct label to support them and soon release their first LP. They decided to stay with Willowtip Records (Cacophonous Records in Europe). The line-up was changed when Sebastien Painchaud who was replaced by their current bassist, Miguel Valade. With this change, they started playing their first major acts as the starting acts for such bands as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, Daughters, Misery Index, The End and, The Black Dahlia Murder.
During April 2003, they started the recording process for their first LP, Breathing is Irrelevant with sound-engineer Yanick St-Amand (Neuraxis, Martyr, In Dying Days), the album was completed in June 2003, and it came out in October 2003. It received many favourable reviews from a number of webzines and zines including Metal Maniacs, Terrorizer and Unrestrained.
In 2004, they started their first big tours including the US East Coast Tour with Forever is Forgotten which was sucsessful due to the positive reaction from the crowds; the East to West coast of Canada with fellow Canadians, The End; this was then followed by the Maryland Deathfest. They have also replaced Miguel Valade with their current bassist, Xavier St-Laurent. Currently, they are touring to support their new release on Abacus Recordings entitled Solace.
On Tuesday, June 20th, 2006, Gab announced his departure from Ion Dissonance. Gab has issued the following statement:
"It's over... and it's probably the hardest decision I had to take in my entire life. There are so many reasons... to be totally honest with you, I don't even know where to begin with this. Basically the Passion was slowly slipping away, but of course its not that simple. Over the years, several concerns (problems) began to spawn in my mind and concerned only me I guess, my personal views on how I was picturing myself doing in the band. And therefore my views on how I perceived Extreme music in general which differed from what Ion Dissonance would become. And I cannot deny the fact that it also had to do with some intra-social issues within the band itself.
Let it be known that I hold no grudge whatsoever and will always be eternally thankful for those years spent with Ion Dissonance, touring, rocking hard and having a blast. Yet I feel like now is the time for me to move on and step aside... I need to find myself other means of expressions. Its time for me to concentrate more on different styles of music, different artistic mediums and focus more on personal issues for instance. There are so many things I wanna achieve in life that were impossible for me to undertake and still be a 100% committed to the band. Hopefully some of you guys will still follow my evolution as a writer, lyricist, graphic designer and conceptualist... This won't be the last time you'll hear about me, I promise.
I will miss you all, and you have no idea how grateful I am to have met so many quality individuals and friends on the road and throughout the years. I am speechless for all the fans we've acquired along this harsh path and especially for the support you've showed us and showed me. I sure hope I was a source of inspiration to some of you and know that in return you were my main source of motivation. I always tried to be completely genuine and honest through both my lyrics and performance and I hope you cherished those moments and those shows as much as I did.
I wish all the best to my brothers in Ion Dissonance and I know everything they're gonna release is gonna be nothing short of amazing for lack of better words, don't even doubt it."
In October 2006, Ion Dissonance introduced their new vocalist, Kevin McCaughey of the band Shaolin.
