International School of Tanganyika

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International School of Tanganyika (IST) is an international school in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which opened in 1963, shortly after independence. As of 2005 it has three campuses serving 960 students from more than 60 countries, with over 100 teaching staff.

The International School of Tanganyika is an IB World School which hosts the International Baccalaureate, the MYP (Middle Years Program) as well as the PYP (Primary Years Program).

Scholars from IST go on to study in prestigious universities such as MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Brown, LSE, UCL, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, and Stanford, to name but a few. The class of 2006 had acceptances from all of these universities, with the exception of Harvard, which gave offers in 2005 and three offers in 2004. Students often do very well in the IB Diploma exams, many of which achieve the IB "excellent status" (35 points or over) out of a possible 45 points. Among doing well academically, students of IST are well engaged in the Community service aspect of the IB CAS programme. In 2003, a community service activity known as "Eyesight for All" was selected by the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) as being the best community service activity in the entire world.

In sports, IST performs well in the regional ISSEA (International School's of Southern and Eastern Africa) tournaments, where Basketball, Volleyball, Rugby and Football are played.
