International HAPE Database
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The International HAPE Database is a confidential registry of individuals known to be susceptible to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). It may be used by researchers worldwide to recruit participants in research studies in order to discover the reasons for individual susceptibility to altitude illness. The registry was set up in 2005.
A registry of this kind is considered necessary because of difficulties in researching these conditions. The main problems are that serious altitude illness is very rare and if the patient survives, the pathology usually resolves quickly.
