The International Award Association began in May 1988.

In the 1980s The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was operating on a national basis, through National Award Authorities (NAAs), in over 30 countries and the process of forming an International Award began. In May 1988, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Association was formally constituted to act as a means for discussion and communication between members.

The International Award Association programme runs in almost 100 countries. The programme runs under a number of different titles in some countries, for example The President's Award or the National Youth Achievement Award in Singapore. More specific national titles are also used, for instance: Premio Infante D. Henrique in Portugal, Avartti in Finland and Gaisce in the Republic of Ireland.

Typical programme of sections are similar:

  1. Skill
  2. Service
  3. Physical Recreation
  4. Adventurous Journey (the same as the UK title: Expeditions)
  5. Residential Project - at gold level this is an additional level
