Institute of Ideas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute of Ideas is a British libertarian think tank founded in 2000, growing out of a series of events organized by Living Marxism magazine. Claire Fox is the founder and director. Dolan Cummings is the Research Director and editor of the Institute's reviews website Culture Wars. Tony Gilland is the Science and Society Director and Tiffany Jenkins is the Arts and Society Director. It is a limited company whose commercial aims and political agenda are hidden by its name.

The self-declared mission of the Institute is to expand the boundaries of public debate by organising conferences, discussions and salons, and publishing written conversations and exchanges.

Thousands of individuals have participated as speakers, audience members and organising partners in over one hundred conferences and seminars, debating everything from the ethics of genetic engineering to the role of museums.

Sixth Form students have also been involved in the Debating Matters competition, sponsored by Pfizer and the Wellcome Trust.

Between 2004-5, the Institute has established up a number of monthly forums in London, focusing upon Health, Books, Education, Postgraduate and Undergraduate studies.

In August 2005 it was announced that the Institute of Ideas will focus upon an annual weekend festival, the Battle of Ideas, with a view to bringing together various themes and strands from conferences run previously.
